2017 Volkswagen Golf Review

Practicality and fun come wrapped in an attractive package with the 2017 Volkswagen Golf. The hatchback design makes it easy to fit plenty of items in the rear, as well as taller adults, so you can do more in life. A compact footprint, stiff chassis and supreme balance ensure amazing handling for an engaging experience each time you go literally anywhere. The latest safety innovations combine with a downright luxurious interior, making for a car you can be proud to own.

For the 2017 Volkswagen Golf, only the four-door version of the car is left. There are two trim levels, called the S and Wolfsburg Edition. Both are powered by a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine, plus a turbocharger. The setup makes a healthy 170 horsepower and 199 lb.-ft. of torque, giving the car the ability to accelerate quickly. Front-wheel drive, plus a six-speed manual transmission are both standard. There's an available Tiptronic transmission with a sport mode, which is an automatic with the ability to change gears manually.

Backing up the powertrain is a unitary suspension, with a strut setup in the front and a multilink configuration for the rear. A four-wheel antilock disc brake system brings the car to a halt, without losing control. Electronic stability control helps in more aggressive maneuvers, or when the road's surface becomes too rough.

Both active and passive safety systems help make the 2017 Volkswagen Golf a vehicle you can feel confident owning. To boost stopping power in panic situations, there is a hydraulic brake assist, brake override system and electronic brake-pressure distribution. Through engine braking assist, drivers can slow down the car in hilly terrain, without the risk of vapor lock and the loss of brake pressure. Anti-slip regulation boosts traction when it's needed most.

On the passive side of things, the 2017 Volkswagen Golf has been engineered to withstand serious crashes. The front end and pedals are designed to absorb kinetic energies, preventing injury. Beams embedded in the doors guard against intrusion in a side collision. A number of reinforcements in the safety cage help preserve the passenger area, while a comprehensive airbag setup provides extra protection for both rows of seating. With the automatic post-collision braking system, drivers don't need to worry about keeping their foot on the pedal, helping guard against secondary crashes.

The interior of the 2017 Volkswagen Golf was created for comfort and functionality. Air conditioning is standard, along with rear air vents in the center console. Drivers use a leather-wrapped steering wheel, which features useful switches such as cruise controls. The power windows include pinch protection. Two 12-volt power outlets, one located in the front and one in the rear, allow drivers and passengers to charge devices or run a variety of gadgets while on the go. The backseat is on a 40/60 split, plus has a fold-down pass-through with integrated cupholders. Among the onboard technologies is a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity and an advanced infotainment system.
